Quanzhou Museum of Contemporary Art (QMoCA, in development)
Long-Term Project
The Quanzhou Museum of Contemporary Art(QMoCA) was initiated by world renowned contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang, and designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry. Once the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, Quanzhou has recently been honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated on the city’s Golden Coast – one of China’s Eight Most Beautiful Coastlines – when complete, QMoCA will be likened to landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House. Its cornerstone ceremony was held in December, 2023.
Cai has remained deeply committed to its realization, including raising funds through the 2013 auction of his Quanzhou-inspired gunpowder painting Homeland. Cai foundation is currently in the process of donating 66 (groups of) Cai’s artworks to QMoCA’s collection and continuing to raise additional funds for the museum’s establishment.
