Cai Guo-Qiang donated his gunpowder painting Marx’s Mustache to the Asian Cultural Council (ACC), which was later auctioned at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in October 2012 to raise funds for the ACC Cai Fellowship.

Having been supported by ACC in 1995 to participate in an artist residency program in New York, Cai established the fellowship with the proceeds from the sale as a way of giving back and nurturing the next generation of artists. The fellowship supports two artists annually in cultural exchange between the United States and Asia. The inaugural recipient, Dai Wei, a promising young new media artist from the Shanghai Theatre Academy, traveled to New York to research emerging developments in his field.
